Do you have a sense of adventure?! Under the expert leadership of your pro guide and crew, does exploring uninhabited islands and wild frontiers sounds exciting? Yielding to Mother Nature and letting her decide the direction in which your sails turn could not sound more perfect? Fresh seafood and tropical dishes cooked for you over an open fire under the island stars makes your mouth water? Coconut crabs chasing your toes sound exciting?! Then sailing the expanse of the Quirimbas Archipelago in northern Mozambique is one of those adventures you have to do in your lifetime.

Explore a coastline fringed by tropical islands on our sturdy motorized 11-meter Arab dhow complete with experienced crew and pro guide. Sea kayak or sail up wide coastal river mouths teeming with red listed bird species and pristine mangrove forests. 

 

Snorkel off deserted white sandbanks and into turquoise sea, and sleep in mobile fly camps on uninhabited tropical islands. Chef conjures up fresh seafood and traditional cuisine over an open fire under island stars. All mobiles end at the mysti­cal and ancient Ibo Island and the comfort and luxury of 3 nights at the beautiful Ibo Island Lodge.  A perfect end to a unique adventure!
 


Itinerary in brief
  • Days 1 & 2: Arrive Pemba - road transfer to Mogundula Island:
You will be met at the airport and shown to your transfer vehicle for the 3-hour road transfer to Mucojo. Arrive Mucojo and dhow transfer to Mogundula Island.
In our opinion Mogundula Island is one of the best islands in the archipelago which is why we spend 2 nights here giving you a fantastic base from which to explore. Known by the locals as the island with the sacred lake it provides us with beautiful bird watching, pristine swimming off the sandbank beach and excellent snorkeling... We will set up our camp under the shade of trees and you have this magical uninhabited island to yourself! 
Overnight camp and exploring on Mogundula Island and surrounds. 
Day trip by dhow to the Pangane Peninsula and/or Macaloe Island from our camp.

  • Day 3: Start of Dhow Safari - Mogundula Island to Ulumbwa: 
Today will have you climbing aboard your dhow accompanied by your trusty crew, carrying equipment and supplies.  Depart Mogundula for your exploration into the Quirimbas Archipelago! Sail into the clearest of blue water with pristine corals below to explore under snorkel.  
The Ulumbwa river mouth beckons and it is here where fascinating rural fishing villages dot the shore.   Your chance to camp on the beach in the open Mozambique bush south of Ulumbwa.

  • Day 4: Ulumbwa to Matemo Island:
Turquoise clear waters and beautiful scenery awaits you en route, but before enjoy an early morning sail up the Ulumbwa estuary viewing a variety of birds & mangroves that thrive in this area. In the afternoon, take a tour through this fishing village getting to know the ways of these fisher folk as interpreted by your knowledgeable guide.
We will stop on the southern tip of Matemo Island and explore this part of the island.

  • Days 5, 6 & 7: Matemo Island to Ibo Island:
Probably the most compelling attraction in the Quirimbas, Ibo's 200-year-old ghost town and 16th Century forts make for a fascinating journey to an era long forgotten. 
The Ibo Island guided Experience (included) provides a chance to interact with the amazingly friendly local people and observe their unique island culture and heritage and a way of life that has not changed for hundreds of years.  Wander around the mysterious ruins amongst forts and ancient trade buildings with many fascinating stories just waiting to be told.  
Ibo Island lodge has spectacular views over the waterfront and accommodates guests in beautifully simple yet elegant rooms.  Historic colonial mansions with high ceilings have been stylishly renovated to accommodate the lodge with various verandas, tropical gardens and a spectacular roof top restaurant that provides the ideal venue to watch the sun go down. The emphasis at Ibo Island Lodge is on complete relaxation and a base from which to explore this fascinating island.

  • Day 8: Ibo Island to Pemba for flight out:
An included beautiful light aircraft flight over the islands and turquoise waters transfers you to Pemba International Airport from Ibo Island Lodge.

  • 5 days pristine island hopping by dhow - exploring and overnight island or beach camps
  • Experienced English and Portuguese speaking crew
